This study aims to investigate the most common strategies of suggestory speech act performed byIndonesian students learning English as a foreign language. The subjects of the study were 20 of third yearstudents at English Education Department of UPI. The data were collected through DiscourseCompletionTest (DCT) and interviews. All the data gathered were analyzed by applying the framework of Flor (2005) and Brown-Levinson’s (1987) theory. The findings showed that students employed different strategies of suggestion. In this study, there were 12 suggestion strategies analyzed, i.e. performative verbs, noun of''suggestion”, imperatives, negative imperatives, the use of specific formulae (the interrogative forms), possibility or probability expressions with the use of modal verbs, the verb “should” utilization, the verb need” utilization, the use of the conditional, the use of hints, the use of different impersonal forms, and obligation form. However, the most common strategy used was the use of hints strategy of indirect type which implies that the students tend to protect the hearer’s status by softening the superiority in giving a suggestion. The second common pattern used was the use of specific formulae of conventionalized forms type which indicates that the speaker is likely to let the hearer decide whether to take the suggestions or not. While the third common pattern used was the utilization of verb “should” of conventionalized forms type which implies a quite weak obligation from the speaker to the hearer. In this study, the influence of such social variables as age (A), gender (G), setting (L), social distances (D), power (P) and ranking of imposition(R) were also observed in students’ suggestion utterances. However, the result of the study described that only age, power, and ranking of imposition were the considerable influence on the strategy choices.Key words: Speech act; Suggestion; DCT; The Use of Hints Strategy

Studi ini bertujuan untuk menyelidiki strategi yang paling umum dari suggestory speech act yang dilakukan oleh mahasiswa Indonesia yang belajar bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing. Subjek studi adalah 20 mahasiswa tahun ketiga di Departemen Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris UPI. Data dikumpulkan melalui tes penyelesaian wacana (DCT) dan wawancara. Semua data yang dikumpulkan dianalisis dengan menerapkan kerangka Flor (2005) dan teori Brown-Levinson (1987). Temuan menunjukkan bahwa mahasiswa menggunakan strategi memberikan saran yang berbeda. Dalam studi ini, ada 12 strategi saran yang dianalisis, yaitu performative verbs, noun of “suggestion”, imperatives, negative imperatives, the use of specific formulae (the interrogative forms), possibility or probability expressions with the use of modal verbs, the verb “should” utilization, the verb “need” utilization, the use of the conditional, the use of hints, the use of different impersonal forms, and obligation form. Namun, strategi yang paling umum digunakan adalah the useof hints strategi jenis tidak langsung yang menyiratkan bahwa siswa cenderung untuk melindungi statuspendengarnya oleh pelunakan keunggulan dalam memberikan saran. Pola umum kedua yang digunakanadalah strategi the use of specific formulae jenis bentuk-bentuk konvensional yang menunjukkan bahwa speaker ini cenderung untuk membiarkan pendengar yang memutuskan untuk mengambil saran atau tidak.Sementara pola umum ketiga yang digunakan adalah strategi the verb “should” utilization jenis bentuk-bentuk konvensional yang berarti kewajiban cukup lemah dari speaker untuk pendengar. Dalam studi ini, pengaruh variabel sosial seperti usia (A), jenis kelamin (G), setting (L), jarak sosial (D), kekuatan (P) dan peringkat dari imposisi (R) juga diamati dalam ucapan-ucapan saran siswa. Namun, hasil dari studi dijelaskan bahwa usia, kekuatan, dan peringkat dari imposisi yang pengaruh yang cukup besar pada pilihan strategi.Kata kunci: Speech act; Saran; DCT; Strategi the use of hints
